The mission

To inspire and develop a level of comfort with the wilderness, helping people access outdoor pursuits more easily.

What we do

The Roots in the Wilderness Podcasts overviews trails and trips, letting you know important details about what to bring, route finding, and any other pertinent information to allow you to enter the wilderness at ease.

We also interview other outdoor professionals about different activities or locations, offering different opinions about many outdoor subject matters.

Roots in the Wilderness Trips offer a wide variety of guided wilderness experiences from intro backpacking trips,  mindful hiking with art therapeutics, and various multi-sport expeditions.

Who we are

Kate Hamilton

Kate is your average outdoor enthusiast, dabbling in many different outdoor adventures and prioritizing getting out to the mountains with her dog, and whomever else she can entice to come with her.

Kate went into outdoor guiding in 2010 on a whim after testing the waters with many other careers to realize that it was most important and enjoyable to her to be outside, moving, and teaching. She has been a sea kayak guide, guided backpacking trips, instructed snowboarding, and spent many years in outdoor camp leadership and as an outdoor pursuits facilitator developing and teaching outdoor and fitness activities with a focus in mindfulness. Kate is also a mindfulness practices facilitator and yoga instructor with a special interest in back health, and yoga for outdoor sports such as hiking, biking, and paddling.

Kate’s passion is to help people become more active and to spend more time in the outdoors with purpose of health, both mentally and physically. Although Kate is not a teacher in a classical sense, she is an educator and life long learner, finding great satisfaction in leading outdoor activities and facilitating connection within people, between people, and with nature.

Loving most things active (pass on indoor swimming and volleyball) and all things outdoors, Kate’s spare time is spent on the move and usually outside. If Kate was forced into choosing one sport - on top of the mountain peaks is where she would be!

Jackie is a registered Recreation Therapist and currently works in mental health and addictions to support adults in learning how recreation and leisure is valuable in their personal recovery journey. Jaclynn Phillips

Art Therapist

Jaclynn is an outdoor enthusiast with a background in social work and fine arts.

Her combined education allows her to practice as a registered social worker while integrating art and nature into her practice.

Working in the therapy field now for 8 years, Jaclynn has had the opportunity to help heal a variety of populations through the use of art. These populations include seniors, the disability community, children, at-risk youth, individuals with mental health barriers and domestic violence victims.

In recent years, Jaclynn has personally experienced the remedial benefits of outdoor activity through her experience with hiking, mountaineering and rock climbing. This has driven her to experiment with the combination of her two passions, art and the outdoors, resulting in positive outcomes.
